REPORT BACK

SACAA in association with Eskom hosted the prestige Ash Conference on 22 February 2018 at the Eskom Megawatt Park Auditorium. 10 papers were presented as well as 5 Exhibition stands with over 100 delegates attended. SACAA had the privilege of having the Vice President Ash and Water from Sasol Secunda, Ronel Kotze giving an inspiring opening address to kick start the conference. This was followed by some excellent ash related papers and the day was ended by the General Manager Kendal Power Station, Christopher Nani doing the conference wrap up and closing address, where he indicated that Ash could be the “New Gold” in terms of creating jobs.
The presentations were of a high standard and the topics addressed many topics made for an interesting and informative conference. It must be highlighted by Mishelle Govender from the DEA stressing that ash utilisation has demonstrated that it is a resource, notwithstanding that it is a waste.

What an experience to see the volume of ash that is generated per day. The tour then visited the Ash Resources site next to Lethabo, where Jakes Rosslee and Dirk Odendaal explained the ash processes once the ash is sent from Lethabo.

Delegates Feedback

The comments received was that this was very interesting and the awareness of ash utilisation and the importance of having ash infrastructure in place to handle the ash going forward.

Many the delegates were from the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC) who indicated that they now have a better understanding when new development for capital infrastructure projects are presented to them for funding.
